Drywall repair prices in San Diego
Most drywall jobs are priced by the size of the damaged area, how many spots need repair, whether the wall texture has to match, and whether paint blending is included. A clean patch on a white garage wall is fast. A living-room wall with knockdown texture, afternoon light and custom paint takes more time because the patch has to disappear.
| Repair | What is usually included | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Small nail holes / anchor marks | Fill, sand, spot prime | $99-$149 |
| Doorknob hole | Patch, joint compound, texture match | $149-$199 |
| 6-12 inch hole | Backer, new drywall piece, tape, texture | $199-$249 |
| Multiple small holes | Bundled patches in one visit | $149-$299 |
| Water-damaged section | Cut-out, new board, tape, texture after dry source | $249-$449+ |
| Ceiling drywall patch | Overhead work, texture blend, dust control | $249-$399+ |
Minimum service call: $149 for a single small visit. If you have several holes, anchor pulls or wall marks, bundle them into one text and one visit - that is usually the cheapest way to handle drywall.
Cost by damage type
Nail holes and picture-anchor marks
These are the cheapest repairs when the wall is otherwise sound. We fill with lightweight compound, sand, spot-prime and feather the paint if you have matching paint. For rental move-outs, send one wide photo of each wall and one close-up of the worst spot so we can quote the whole punch list.
Doorknob holes
A doorknob punch is usually a 3-5 inch hole. The repair is not just spackle: we add a backing piece or patch panel, tape the seams, build compound in layers, sand, texture and paint. If the door still hits the same spot, we also recommend a door stop or hinge adjustment so the repair does not get punched again.
Anchor tear-outs
TV mounts, floating shelves and curtain rods often leave torn paper and crushed gypsum when the wrong anchors were used. We cut back to stable material, bridge the damaged area and re-texture. If you want the item re-hung, we anchor into studs or use the right toggle anchors for the load.
Large cut-outs
Anything bigger than about 12 inches usually needs a square cut-out, new drywall board, backing, tape and at least two compound passes. If plumbing or electrical work created the opening, we can close the wall after the trade is finished and the area is dry and safe.
Texture and paint are what make a patch disappear
San Diego homes are full of orange peel, knockdown, skip trowel and older plaster textures. Matching that surface is the difference between "repaired" and "obvious rectangle in the wall." Texture adds time because we have to test the spray or hand pattern, let it flash, knock it down if needed, then prime before paint.
- Orange peel - common in newer apartments, condos and tract homes. Usually sprayed from a hopper or aerosol texture for tiny spots.
- Knockdown - common in East County and older remodels. Texture is sprayed, then flattened at the right time.
- Smooth wall - not easier. Smooth walls show every ripple in side light, so sanding and feathering matter more.
- Plaster / lath - common in older North Park, South Park, Hillcrest and La Mesa homes. We patch differently than standard drywall.
Paint is the other variable. If you have leftover paint, the match is easier. If not, we can take a chip for matching, but older wall paint fades, so a full corner-to-corner repaint is sometimes the only way to make the repair invisible.
Water-damaged drywall costs more
Water damage is a different job because the source has to be fixed first. We do not close wet drywall over an active leak. Once the area is dry, we cut out soft or stained board, check the backing, install new drywall, tape, texture and prime with stain-blocking primer before paint.
Common San Diego causes: washing-machine valves, shower valve leaks, roof or balcony leaks after winter rain, AC condensate lines, and old plumbing behind bathroom vanities. If there is active plumbing, mold concern or a roof leak, that trade has to resolve the source before we patch the wall.
DIY vs hiring a pro
DIY is fine for tiny nail holes in a low-visibility wall. Hire a pro when the hole is larger than a few inches, the wall has texture, the repair sits in bright side light, the damage is on a ceiling, or you are trying to pass a move-out or sale inspection. The money is mostly paying for the finish: no hump, no square patch outline, no mismatched texture.
